Earning money as a service provider has different challenges than selling a physical or virtual product. So when Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port was recommended to me by my content creator, Jess (also a service provider), I knew it would be a must read. And I was right!
Though this book is written with a formulaic approach (“follow my 7-step system to be successful”), what I like about it is that Port encourages the reader to pick and choose the parts of the system that are most in sync with your own business goals and strengths. Though he encourages you to step outside your comfort zone and experiment with something new, he also acknowledges that no system or formula is a perfect match, step by step, for every business owner.
Book Yourself Solid walks you through the process of establishing:
- your business foundation – your message, brand, and website
- your reputation – building trust and credibility in your industry
- your sales process – pricing your services and getting comfortable with sales
- your marketing – this is where he takes you through the 7 core self-promotion strategies (networking, direct outreach, referrals, keep-in-touch, speaking, writing, and web)
This book helped me really solidify my message in terms of what I want to offer the world and how I want to be of service to others. It also helped me set up some systems for establishing relationships with new clients, and finding the right people who will be an ideal fit for my business services.
If you have a service-based business where you work one-on-one with individuals or you serve companies or businesses, this is an excellent book for helping you identify what you want to do, who you want to serve, and how you’re going to reach your goals.
